AN ANALYTICAL MODEL IS PRESENTED FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT BETWEEN A CELL AND AN AQUEOUS MEDIUM. THE ANALYSIS ESTIMATES THE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE ACROSS THE MEMBRANE DURING FREEZING AND ITS EFFECT ON THE ATTENDANT WATER TRANSPORT VIA THERMO-OSMOSIS AND OTHER MECHANISMS. ANALYTIC SOLUTIONS SHOW THAT THE EFFECT OF THIS TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE CAN BE NEGLECTED FOR MOST PRACTICAL CASES.
