Vacuum freeze refrigerated circuit (VFRC), a new system design for energy effective heat pumping applications.

Author(s) : ZAKERI G. R.

Summary

Vacuum freeze system designs based on triple-point principle of water have in general shown great energy saving potentials. They are characterized by direct contact heat transfer under adiabatic throttling of water solution to a pressure slightly under solution's triple point. The paper describes a new system design based on the same principle, using two refrigerated circuits instead of water vapour compressors. The two refrigerated circuits are operated cyclically. Another distinctive feature of VFRC is in its handling of the desublimated ice which makes up about 12% of refrigeration capacity of the system. Using warm, high pressure condensate as deicing heat source, the system is capable of recovering the stored refrigeration from the desublimated ice layer, increasing its energy efficiency. Experimental results from a test unit are presented and discussed.
