Zeotropic refrigerants in the real world: performance testing of R22 and R502 alternatives based on R32-R125-R134a.
Author(s) : BRESNAHAN J. D., LOW R. E.
Summary
The need for alternatives has led to the development of a number of zeotropic (blended) refrigerants. The paper discusses the practical aspects of the use of these refrigerants, based on considerable experience of use and handling in the field, in a range of refrigeration and air-conditioning applications. The physical characteristics of zeotropes are discussed and the physical properties of fractionation and boiling range are explained. The practical issues raised by the properties of fractionation in relation to leakage and servicing are covered for the R32-R125-R134a system. This forms the basis of the refrigerants allocated R407 numbers by ASHRAE. The topic of differential leakage is addressed.
