Summary

A US compressor manufacturer has conducted field and laboratory research into the causes and effects of compressor lubricating oil colouration. The main cause appears to be oxidation, signifying air in the system. This causes a darkening of the oil at compressor discharge temperatures with R22 particularly. Other factors, such as moisture reacting with cast iron, copper tube oxidation through brazing with no inert gas present, and other contaminants may contribute. The manufacturer has produced a colour index from 0 to 10. High colour values indicate acid present and probably moisture. But colour change does not signify lack of lubrication. D.W.H.
