THESE TWO ARTICLES PRESENT OPPOSING VIEWS ON THIS QUESTION. IN THE FIRST, THE AUTHORS IN THE FORM OF A REBUTTLE TO AN ARTICLE WHICH HAD APPEARED IN AN EARLIER ISSUE OF THE SAME JOURNAL, CONTEST THE FEASIBILITY OF AIR AS A REFRIGERANT IN CAR AIR CONDITIONERS. THE AIR PROCESS REQUIRES THREE TO SIX TIMES MOREENERGY THAN THE VAPOUR PROCESS, THUS INCREASING EXHAUST. MOREOVER, R134A AIR CONDITIONERS NOWADAYS ARE MORE AIRTIGHT AND REQUIRE A SMALLER CHARGE THAN BEFORE. UNRESOLVED PROBLEMS WITH THE AIR PROCESS: NOISE, OIL ODOURS AND DEHUMIDIFICATION.IN THE SECOND ARTICLE, THE AUTHORS OF THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE RESPOND TO EACH CRITICISM. M. C.
