Air as a replacement for CFC refrigerants.

Summary

The paper sets out some of the reasons why research is being undertaken into possible applications of air and the development of suitable equipment. Because interest in air as a refrigerant is only just reawakening there are gaps in the available information and final conclusions regarding its practicality cannot yet be made. There are sufficient potential advantages in air cycle refrigeration to warrant in-depth theoretical and practical investigations. These should lead to the building of commercial scale pilot plants and full economic/environmental appraisals of their applications. It is unlikely that air-cycle refrigeration will be suitable for all applications, but it could make a contribution in improving some refrigeration processes and our environment. For the future it has a great potential for development.
