Technical and cost comparison of refrigeration cycles (R22, R407C, R410A, propane).

Summary

This paper describes the diferences between refrigerants R22 and the favourite replacement candidates R407C, R410A and by way of comparison, propane. Starting from the thermodynamic point of view, two different methods and test results are described: a) thermodynamically correct comparison of fluids in optimized equipment with constant cooling capacities and temperature conditions; and b) comparison of refrigeration cycle capacities using different refrigerants. In the second part of the paper, the cost for different refrigeration cycles based on literature data as well as responses from equipment distributors is shown. Results show that from the thermodynamic point of view R407C and even better R410A are suitable replacements for R22. Due to the high volumetric capacity of R410A in comparison to R22, R407C and propane, a reduction of the system size and refrigerant charge is possible by using R410A. Furthermore, and most important, a cost reduction of the refrigerating systems is possible.
