Summary

GOLDEN DELICIOUS, RED DELICIOUS AND JONATHAN APPLES WERE TREATED WITH A 0.2% FUNGICIDAL SOLUTION < FUNDASOL >, PLACED IN TRAYS WHICH WERE STACKED IN A COLD ROOM. THE STACK WAS LAID ON POLYETHYLENE SHEETING. TRAYS CONTAINING HYDRATED LIME WERE PLACED IN SEVERAL PLACES BETWEEN THE FRUIT TRAYS (5% OF THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE FRUIT) TO ABSORB THE CO2. THE WHOLE STACK WAS COVERED WITH POLYETHYLENE FOIL WITH THE ENDS OF THE SHEETING BEING HELD DOWN ON THE FLOOR WITH WEIGHTS. AFTER 7 MONTHS AT 273 K (0 DEG C), THE TASTE WAS FOUND TO BE MUCH SUPERIOR. LOSSES DUE TO WATER EVAPORATION AND FRUIT DISORDERS WERE LOWER: 6.94% LOWER FOR GOLDEN DELICIOUS, 4.12% FOR RED DELICIOUS, AND 6.58% FOR JONATHAN.
