THE QUALITY OF APPLES AND PEARS CAN BE GREATLY IMPROVED BY APPLYING CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE CONDITIONS OF 1 TO 2% OF OXYGEN. FAST PRECOOLING AND STORAGE AT 272.5 K (-0.5 DEG C) AS WELL AS RAPID CA ALSO IMPROVES STORAGE LIFE AND EATING QUALITY OF APPLES AND PEARS. CA STORAGE OF FLAMEKIST NECTARINES AND SANTA ROSA PLUMS ARE NOT CONSIDERED PRACTICAL OR ECONOMICAL BECAUSE OF SEVERE WOOLLINESS (MEALINESS) AND BREAKDOWN RESPECTIVELY. EXPERIMENTAL DATA IS PRESENTED TO QUANTIFY EFFECTS.
