Ammonia in ships.
Author(s) : STERA A. C.
Type of article: Periodical article
Summary
The author reviews the early history of the refrigerated ship and the use of ammonia over the past 50 years. The properties of R717 are compared with R22 and the advantages and disadvantages of the two are discussed, including the health hazards. A detailed description of a new refrigerated ship built to LR Class is given including the scrubbing system for ammonia leaks, and various scenarios at different operating conditions are discussed. The installation has performed well, the indirect R717/brine system proving to be more efficient than a comparable R22 direct expansion system. G.R.S.
