The environmental aspects of refrigerants and refrigeration systems in the shipping industry.

Author(s) : BRUINSMA M. H.

Summary

Refrigerant R22 will be phased out, which means that an alternative will be required. One alternative is ammonia, which requires the application of an indirect system on board refrigerated cargo vessels. Other alternatives are drop in HFC replacements. Presently the chemical industry proposes a mixture of R32 (23%), R125 (25%), and R134a (52%). The only consequence for the design of the refrigerating system would be an increase in compressor motor size of 3%. A direct expansion system will still be substantially less expensive than an ammonia brine system. The environmental consequences are also less. The requirements for conversion are minimal. A laboratory test has been conducted with encouraging results.
