Summary

This paper presents heat transfer characteristics of a microchannel evaporator for a man-portable coiling system. The channel depth and width of the microchannel evaporator were 330 and 500 micrometers respectively. R-134a and water were used as working fluids. In this study, the effects of temperature of water inlet and mass flowrate of water on the heat transfer rate, overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop were investigated experimentally. The experimental data were analyzed by RSM. Under nominal design conditions, the heat transfer rate of the microchannel evaporator was 470 W and the overall heat transfer coefficient was 2866 W/m2°C. It was found that the heat transfer rate of the microchannel evaporator was higher than that of the conventional evaporator.
