An industry perspective: lessons learned and the cost of CFC phaseout.

Author(s) : VOGELSBERG F. A.

Summary

In the more than 20 years since stratospheric ozone was first suggested as a hypothesis, the world is on the verge of a global environmental success story. However, it could be premature to claim victory as there are still several critical details that must be pursued to ensure elimination of the ozone hole over the Antarctic and recovery to the ozone layer by mid next century. Industry believes several key learnings have occured in the global pursuit of protection of the ozone layer. Costs for ensuring long term protection of the stratospheric ozone layer will amount to several tens of billions of dollars, with much of the cost burden still to occur. The paper deals with the complete history of the problem and gives an overview on the lessons already learned.
