AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE IGNITABILITY OF FROZEN MEAT CARCASSES.

Author(s) : BASTINGS D., HUNT J. H.

Summary

A SURVEY SPONSORED BY THE FREEZING COMPANIES ASSOCIATION OF NEW ZEALAND ON THE FLAMMABILITY OF MEAT SHOWED THAT CARCASSES, EITHER FRESH OR FROZEN, BURN WHEN A SUFFICIENTLY LARGE SOURCE OF HEAT IS APPLIED FOR LONG ENOUGH. FROZEN CARCASSES, PACKAGED AND STACKED HORIZONTALLY MAY DEVELOP UNOBSERVED IGNITION. A FIRE CAN THEREFORE BE SELF-SUSTAINING. IN PRACTICE, IN A COLD STORE THE HAZARD OF A VERY SIGNIFICANT HEAT SOURCE IS EXTREMELY IMPROBABLE.
