SPACE UTILIZATION OF LAMB CARCASSES AND CARTONED MEAT IN COLD STORAGE AND TRANSPORT.

Author(s) : WYBORN L. G.

Summary

SPACE CONDITIONS FOR FROZEN MEAT IN CARTONS (BEEF AND DEBONED LAMB, LAMB CUTLETS) ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE FOR FROZEN LAMB CARCASES OF A CONVENTIONAL OR MODIFIED SHAPE (SIDES, < TELESCOPED >, SQUARE-CUT AND TRIMMED CARCASES). THE CONTAINER STOWAGE DENSITY IS BETWEEN 300 KG/M3 (CARCASES) AND 650 KG/M3 (DEBONED MEAT). SATISFACTORY EXAMPLES ARE COMPARED: MODERN SINGLE-STOREY STORES WITH PALLETS STOCKPILED IN BULK ; HANGING OF CARCASES ON MECHANICALLY POWERED MOBILE HOOKS ; AND A COMPOSITE STORAGE SYSTEM. THESE 3 SYSTEMS HAVE SIMILAR CARTON STOWAGE DENSITIES (300 KG/M3 ). THE PRACTICALITIES OF FUTURE STANDARDIZATION METHODS FOR CARCASES ARE EXAMINED. THE AUTHOR STUDIES THE PROFITABILITY OF AN INCREASE IN STOWAGE DENSITY WITH A SIMULTANEOUS LENGTHENING OF THE TIME REQUIRED FOR MANUALLY LOADING CONTAINERS.
