An overview of current high temperature heat pump technology.

Summary

For the purpose of the survey high temperature heat pumps are considered to be those having output temperatures greater than 80 deg C. The review considers four types of heat pumps in this category: vapour compression (closed cycles), absorption, heat transformers, compression-absorption. In each case the basic cycle concepts are explained, and typical application areas defined. Some practical installations and performance measurements are described. A summary is presented of recent R&D activities, including the search for environmentally safe high temperature working fluids. Some of the factors required to improve the future prospects for increased application of high temperature heat pumps are discussed.
