Summary

Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing new primary industries in Australia; it already has an annual value of over USD 400 million, is expanding at the rate of 20% per year and is expected to treble in size to USD 1.5 billion over the next decade. Current successes in Australian aquaculture include: Tasmanian salmon; tuna fishermen in South Australia are conserving wild stocks by farming their small quota of fish in one of fastest-growing rural sectors in Australia; Australia's expanding prawn industry. Researchers have discovered evidence of a single gene that results in faster-growing, meatier oysters. Much of the research in CSIRO is on prawns, oysters, salmon, barramundi and the microalgae that support all aquaculture hatchery operations.
