Summary

The fishery sector in Indonesia reaches 12.6 million tons volume in 2020. The number is account for only 18% of its sustainable fishing potential. The fisheries products require a continuous cold chain from their production to process and consumption. One important component of the cold chain is cold storage which contributes a significant amount of energy and emission to its operation. This paper presents an assessment of the cold storage demand for fisheries products and renewable energy technology applications. A production-based model is developed and used to calculate cold storage demand and growth. A supply and demand gap analysis is then performed based on data from existing cold storage infrastructure and technology. The results indicate that only 50% of the cold storage demand is currently fulfilled.
A review of renewable technology options for cold storage is also presented. Based on the assessment of demand and renewable energy technology potential for implementation scenarios, an energy saving of up to 36% can be obtained by 2030 compared to existing fossil fuel energy-based cold storage. To achieve the potential energy saving, a hybrid rooftop solar-powered cold storage is recommended for implementation. For remote regions, a modular, off-grid system of a rooftop solar-powered cold storage with a packed power generator set design is recommended for implementation.
