Biological and production effects of CO2 enrichment of vegetable crops in protected cultivation.

Summary

The influence of atmospheric CO2 enrichment on the chemical composition and production effects was tested on lettuce cv. Isolde and tomato cv. Maeva. The plants were fertilized at the level of 800 micromol CO2/mol, using a prototype of an EUDW-2 atmospheric control system. The CO2 enrichment of the atmosphere induced an increase in the leaf blade area by 27% in the case of tomato and 20% in lettuce. In tomato production a beneficial effect of CO2 was observed with respect to fruit setting (a 22.6% increase as compared with the control plants). An increase in yields (27% for tomato and 44% for lettuce) and an improvement of the quality traits were recorded in crops grown in CO2 enriched atmosphere. In lettuce leaves the content of dry matter increased by 10% and the chlorophyll a: chlorophyll b ratio was improved. The atmospheric CO2 enrichment brought about an improvement in the organoleptic value of tomatoes owing to the reduced content of total acids and an increase in sugar content.
