The effect of modified interactive packaging (MIP) on postharvest storage of some vegetables.

Author(s) : ADAMICKI F.

Summary

During experiments conducted in 2000, the MIP type packaging usefulness for broccoli, sweet peppers, tomatoes and crisphead lettuce storage was studied. The vegetables were cooled down to optimum storage temperature after harvest and put into MIP packages or into the boxes lined with solid polyethylene of 35 microm thick film. Gas atmosphere inside the packages was analysed during storage of the vegetables, and their marketable value, as well as some other quality parameters after storage were evaluated. Applied MIP packages enabled keeping the modified ambient gas composition that resulted positively in maintaining the quality and marketable value of the vegetable in store. The storage periods for vegetables inside the MIP packages were as follows: 6-9 weeks for broccoli, 4-6 weeks for tomatoes, 4 weeks for sweet peppers and 4-5 weeks for crisphead lettuce.
