Carbon dioxide for use as a refrigerant.

Author(s) : WILSON I., MAIER D.

Summary

This study documents the actual performance of a large plant operating with R-744 (CO2) refrigerant and compares these results with those found on an alternative system using a more conventional refrigerant. These tests were conducted with a controlled test environment where one of two alternative refrigeration systems were used to cool a full-sized cold store. Both systems are rated at 72 kW cooling capacity at -31°C SST/35°C ambient. The first system is a single stage R-404A system and the second is a R-744/R-404A cascade system operate at the same room and ambient conditions. They have been running, week on week off for some time to enable an accurate comparison can be drawn. This study also examines the equipment, installation and operational costs for a CO2 driven plant and provides observations on system performance, service and maintenance issues.
