CFCS FOR WATER CHILLERS.

Author(s) : REITZ K.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE ARTICLE SURVEYS THE PRESENT LEGISLATION COVERING THE PHASE-OUT OF CFCS AND THE US TAXES BEING APPLIED TO CFC USE OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS. THE PROBLEM OF SATISFACTORY REPLACEMENTS IS THEN DISCUSSED WITH EMPHASIS ON THE DIFFICULTIES ASSOCIATED WITH DIRECT DROP-IN ALTERNATIVES, SUCH AS R134A OR R123, NEITHER OF WHICH CAN BE USED WITH EXISTING GASKET MATERIALS OR HERMETIC MOTOR INSULATION. RECOVERY OF EXISTING CFCS MUST BE IMPROVED TO ASSIST IN THE TRANSITION, ALLOWING RE-USE OF SUBSTANTIAL QUANTITIES, AND SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE FOR IMPROVED METHODS. R22 WILL HAVE TO BE USED AS A TEMPORARY IMPROVEMENT UNTIL FURTHER REFRIGERANTS AND SYSTEMS ARE DEVELOPED. D.W.H.
