Summary
Coolants in technical cooling plants have to maintain usually temperatures under 0 °C. However, the characterization of their corrosivity on the basis of ASTM D 1384 is carried out at temperatures above 70 °C. It is shown that formiate contained salt coolants which have, in general, a sufficient cooling effect, will be degraded already more and more at temperatures above 40 °C with formation of corrosion promoting species. Therefore, it is proposed to modify this test method according to the really existing conditions in cooling plants.
