Summary

Low temperature refrigeration technology is innovatively used in the production of solid CO2 (dry ice) particles for projection at high velocity in the manner of shot blasting, to clean contaminated components. A description of the process, together with the method of production of the particles, is presented. The field of application is regarded to be broad, though not yet fully researched. Spectacular results are achieved with the added advantage of residues and components remaining dry. Water-ice particles are produced using liquid nitrogen and then fields of application and use are also described. Some of the more spectacular results are illustrated.
