Summary

The "natural" refrigerant CO2 (R744) was already introduced in 1881 by Linde; it was used until the end of the 1930s for ship cooling and air conditioning of buildings until it was replaced by (H)CFCs. The ban on the latter has led to a revival of CO2, which is a safe refrigerant and has no harmful effects on the environment. Moreover, Gustav Lorentzen, Norway, invented a new process, the Lorentzen process, which opens up a new dimension for heat pumping technologies.
