Cold storage and CFCs.
Le froid de l'entreposage et les CFC.
Author(s) : PATIN M.
Type of article: Article
Summary
The author first analyses the results of a detailed survey carried out in France by USNEF (French National Union of Refrigerating Plants), on the utilization of different refrigerants in low-temperature cold storage (including freezing and quick-freezing). It is shown that the CFCs regulated by the Montreal Protocol are not playing an important role in this sector. (The R502 charge represents 5% of the total refrigerant charge). In a second part, the author studies the possibilities and constraints of R502 substitution, either by R22 or by ammonia, in an existing plant. He examines the operating characteristics with the different fluids and underlines the difficulties (steel and copper evaporators, discharge temperatures, operating pressures, possibility of modifying rotational speeds, etc.). He chooses two specific cases as examples and concludes that if ammonia alone generally enables capacity to be preserved, R22 is very often the only solution possible (because of copper evaporators). That is why it would be better to make more flexible the intentions of prohibiting it. J.R.
