Summary

MOULDS ISOLATED FROM MOULDY GRAPES WERE SUBJECTED TO THE ACTION OF SO2 DIFFUSED FROM POLYETHYLENE SACHETS CONTAINING A SODIUM METABISULPHITE SOLUTION. THE PARAMETERS WERE SACHET SIZE AND POLYETHYLENE THICKNESS. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT 9 X 8 CM2 POLYETHYLENE SACHETS OF 80 OR 100 MICROMETERS PROVIDED A BETTER INHIBITION OF MOULDS THAN THOSE OF 7 X 5 OR 10 X 5 CM2 WITH A THICKNESS OF 80, 100 OR 150 MICROMETERS AND THAN THOSE OF 9 X 8 CM2, 150 MICROMETERS THICK. THE IN VIVO TEST CONSISTED IN STORING KING'S RUBY GRAPES AT 1 DEG C, 90% RH. THE SAME TYPES OF GENERATING SACHETS WERE USED. THE SATISFACTORY STORAGE LIFE OF GRAPES DURING TWO MONTHS WAS OBTAINED WITH 8 SACHETS PER CRATE, 80 MICROMETRE THICKNESS AND A SURFACE AREA OF 10 X 5 OR 9 X 8 CM2.
