Ammonia is the oldest (and regarded by proponents as the best) refrigerant whose return to sea after years ashore is proposed as an ozone friendly alternative to HCFC refrigerant R22 which currently dominates marine installations. The article gives guidelines on the use of ammonia as a refrigerant and discusses some of the risks involved.
