Comparative evaluation of heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of cyclopropane, R600a and R12.

Author(s) : ROGSTAM J.

Summary

The paper reports results from a theoretical and experimental study of the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of cyclopropane (RC270) and R600a compared to R12. RC270 and R12 have similar thermodynamic properties. R600a is also investigated since it is widely used in household appliances. The thermal conductivity, the two-phase pressure drop and the high specific volume are studied. A heat exchanger with less volume contains less refrigerant, which is favourable from a safety point of view, especially when flammable refrigerants are used. RC270 has properties that enable reduction of refrigerant charge and heat exchanger area compared to both R12 and R600a.
