Comparison of hermetic scroll and reciprocating compressors operating under varying refrigerant charge and load.

Summary

Two compressors, one scroll and one reciprocating, of the same size and capacity, were tested with R404A. The scroll machine generally produced better results than the reciprocating one. Undercharging or overcharging produced the same results for both compressors. Superheat and subcooling were in both cases functions of system charge level.
