Summary

BITTER PIT HAS BEEN OF MAJOR IMPORTANCE ECONOMICALLY IN THE EXPORT OF SUSCEPTIBLE VARIETIES OF APPLES FROM AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND AND SOUTH AFRICA. EARLIER WORK ON ITS CONTROL IS BRIEFLY REVIEWED. THE DISEASE IS ASSOCIATED WITH A DEFICIENCYOF CALCIUM. SPRAYING OF THE FOLIAGE OF THE TREES OF SUSCEPTIBLE VARIETIES WITH A SOLUTION OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE OR NITRATE HASBEEN ACCEPTED AS STANDARD PRACTICE FOR CONTROL BUT SEVERE BITTER PIT STILL OCCURS SOMETIMES. IT HAS RECENTLY BEEN FOUND IN NEWZEALAND THAT VACUUM OR PRESSURE INFILTRATION OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE INTO CERTAIN POST-HARVEST FRUIT AFFORDS EXCELLENT CONTROL OFBITTER PIT. SIMILAR WORK ON GRANNY SMITH APPLES IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT AND IS REPORTED IN DETAIL IN THIS PAPER AND THE RESULTS DISCUSSED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT GOOD CONTROL OF BITTER PIT IN GRANNY SMITH APPLES CAN BE OBTAINED,WITHOUT CAUSING SKIN INJURY, SIMPLY BY DIPPING THE FRUIT IN OUND WITH GOLDEN DELICIOUS. FURTHER IMPROVEMENT WAS NOTED IF DPA (DIPHENYLAMINE) WAS INCLUDED IN THE DIP.STORAGE TEMPERATURE SHOULD BE 273K (0 DEG C). C.R.F.
