COOLING OF STRAWBERRIES IN CARTONS WITH NEW VENT HOLE DESIGNS.

Author(s) : ARIFIN B. B., CHAU K. V.

Summary

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PAPER ARE: A) TO ESTABLISH THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COOLING RATE AND AIRFLOW RATE ; B) TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF NEW VENT HOLE DESIGNS ON COOLING RATES ; AND C) TO DEVELOP A SIMPLE SIMULATION MODEL FOR THE COOLING OF STRAWBERRIES IN CARTONS. 4 DIFFERENT AIRFLOW RATES, RANGING FROM 0.001 TO 0.006 M3/S PER KG WERE USED. RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE NEW DESIGNS DID IMPROVE COOLING EFFICIENCY, ESPECIALLY AT LOW AIRFLOW RATES. A SIMULATION MODEL GAVE GOOD RESULTS WHEN COMPARED TO EXPERIMENTAL DATA.
