Cost-benefit aspects of food irradiation processing.

Summary

The report considers the benefits of irradiation for food safety in particular reduction of food borne diseases such as salmonellosis, compylobacteriosis and listeriosis. Reduction in spoilage losses, control of sprouting, as an alternative to methyl bromide for insect control are also discussed. International aspects are also considered notably food trade which is currently restricted in some areas by the use of ethylene dibromide. The economic aspects of the treatment of some products are detailed. The need for technology transfer is emphasised and some alternative sources to Cobalt 60 such as electron beam and X rays are also discussed. Finally the commercial aspects of gamma irradiation are considered in some detail. G.R.S.
