Summary

With rodents, islets were cryopreserved without a loss of biological abilities. But clinical studies have some problems. In 1990-1992, the combined transplantation of freshly isolated and/or cultured islets with cryopreserved/thawed islet tissue was reported in 10 cases, and cryopreserved/thawed islet tissue alone was only transplanted in 5 cases. For these two groups, the number of patients who showed basal C-peptide more or equal 1 ng/ml at more or equal 1 month was 8 (80%), and 2 (40%), and the number of insulin independent patient was 4 (40%) and 0 (0%). A better outcome might be achievable.
