Summary

The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol established a roadmap to reduce the global greenhouse gas emissions from refrigerants. The European F-Gas regulation enhanced the replacement of high GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants with low GWP refrigerants such as hydrofluoroolefins (HFO) blends. Low GWP HFO R-454C with a GWP<150 is a long-term alternative to replacethe high GWP HFC R-404A in refrigeration systems and condensing units, with comparable thermodynamic properties, similar performances and with a large reduction of direct equivalent CO2 emissions (-96%). Nonetheless, the different safety profile (A2L) requires a different approach to design and install the systems. This paper describes the process of developing a new R-454C condensing unit system. We focus on the preliminary identification of the end user needs, the determination of the cooling duty and sizing of the system, the compliance with applicable standards and codes such as the EN378, the assembly of components to build the equipment, CE marking procedures, risk assessment and final installation and monitoring.
Compared to a typical system, the supply of the new R-454C system did not involve any considerable complexity. This experience with high-performance and very low GWP solution can give an insight to those who are concerned about the environment and the long-term viability of refrigeration equipment.
