Development of a small scale ammonia/water absorption chiller.
Author(s) : BRENDEL T., ZETZSCHE M., MÜLLER-STEINHAGEN H.
Summary
Ammonia has proved to be an excellent refrigerant with good thermodynamic and transport properties in large industrial applications for many years. There is a growing interest now to use ammonia in smaller absorption systems as well. Especially the use of thermal solar collectors for the supply of the driving heat was a new application for absorption chillers. Solar energy is a very suitable energy source because supply of solar radiation and demand of cooling power for air conditioning of buildings occur at the same time. Research activities in the Institute of Thermodynamics and Thermal Engineering (ITW) of the University of Stuttgart aim at the development of a solar driven ammonia absorption chiller with a cooling power of 10 kW which is ready for the market, together with a concept for the air conditioning of small residential and commercial buildings. With the exception of the generator, all other heat exchangers are designed as plate heat exchangers. Special attention is paid to the recovery of all the internal heat flows. For the circulation of the ammonia solution a diaphragm pump is used. The prototype system is extensively equipped with sensors and control devices. Together with the cooling machine, a concept for the cooling of buildings has been realized. Essential parts of this concept are the building with chilled ceilings, an ice store and the absorption chiller which works with a dry cooling system. Following a period of intensive testing and analysis of the performance, the chiller will now be operated under practical conditions.
