Type of monograph: Book, Guide/Handbook
Summary
This toolkit, prepared by the UNEP Working Group for Cleaner Production in the Food Industry, outlines the environmental challenges faced by food processors and discusses how the application of eco-efficiency strategies can ensure the efficient use of resources, a decrease in waste production and an increase in profitability. It includes chapters on water and wastewater, energy, chemicals, packaging and solid waste and describes potential eco-efficiency opportunities within a food processing plant. Many of these opportunities are supported by Australian case studies along with examples drawn from those Queensland food processing companies who participated in the project. The toolkit also features a self assessment guide that outlines the steps in undertaking an assessment and includes pro-forma sheets designed to be copied and used on-site. The toolkit can be downloaded from: www.gpem.uq.edu.au/food-processing.
