Elemental modelling of an evaporator in a cascade refrigeration system.

Summary

This paper presents a mathematical model for the evaporator of a cascade refrigeration system, operating down to -40°C. The system uses carbon dioxide (R744) as the low temperature cycle refrigerant and propylene (R1270) as the high temperature cycle refrigerant. The model is developed in EES software package following the elemental NTU-effectiveness method. The evaporator is a crossflow finned tube serpentine heat exchanger, where heat exchanger was divided into numerous elements along the flow path of the refrigerant. It is hoped that the model will be useful in designing and optimizing evaporators for such refrigeration systems.
