Summary

The report studies the global warming impact of CFC substitutes in refrigeration systems, insulation, and cleaning solvents. Both direct impact from escaping gases and indirect through energy generation are taken into account. Only known substitutes are studied, including in-kind, such as HCFCs and HFCs, and not-in-kind, such as ammonia as a refrigerant and fibres for insulation. The conclusions, based on both 100 year and 500 year impacts, show that the direct impact can be reduced dramatically by the use of substitutes, but the indirect impact changes little. D.W.H.
