Enrichment of stable isotopes of carbon, an attempt of effective utilization of LNG cold energy.

Author(s) : HAGA K., SOH H.

Summary

Two stable carbon isotopes whose mass numbers are 12 and 13 have been utilized. Their natural abundance ratios are 98.9 and 1.1% respectively. When these isotopes are enriched, they are expected to take on new properties. Artificial diamond synthesized by enriched 12C exhibits extremely high thermal conductivity. And 13C can be safely traced. It is highly expected that the latter can be used as tracers replacing radioactive isotopes in such fields of medicine and pharmacy. Recently, the authors have developed a new process for enrichment of 12C and 13C, which is methane, the main component of LNG, low-temperature distillation using LNG cold energy. They are now producing 99.9%-12C and 99%-13C.
