Evaluating ventilation systems used in potato storehouses.

Summary

Different ventilation systems were tested: a) horizontal flow-round ventilation for storing potatoes in 450-kilogramme pallets piled up in 4 levels and b) flow-through ventilation for bulk storage in piles 5 meters high. At hourly air flow rates of 70 and 17 m3/m3 (for a and b, respectively) the room temperatures were 3-4 and 6-7 deg C, respectively, and air relative humidity was maintained at 86.7-88.6%. In storehouse a), potato storage losses were similar in all pallets but significantly varied within each particular pallet. In bulk storage b), the highest losses were observed at the bottom and the lowest at the top of the pile.
