Summary

This paper presents the evaluation of the A/C system power consumption and CO2 emissions in a conventional bus and in an electric bus. To do so, a methodology to determine the power consumption of the air conditioning system of vehicles has been applied. The methodology uses a dynamic thermal model of vehicles developed in TRNSYS and an A/C system model developed in IMST-ART. Two systems have been evaluated, the first one consists of a compressor coupled directly to the vehicle engine, and the second one consists of an electrical compressor connected to the batteries. In the first case, the model calculated the cooling capacity, which is used to determinate the compressor consumption and CO2 emissions. In the second case, the model calculates the cooling capacity and the compressor speed. All simulations have been developed for to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).
