Summary

A transcritical CO2 air conditioning system for an electric bus was developed and impacts of working conditions on its cooling performance were tested. Results show that the cooling capacity and compressor power increase with the increased charge amount, but the coefficient of performance (COP) increases at first and then decreases, leading to an optimum charge amount of the system, 9.2kg. The effects of compressor speed, electronic expansion valve (EEV) opening and ambient temperature were analysed. The compressor speed can be adjusted to meet various cooling demands and the EEV can be used to control the high pressure of the system and achieve the optimum COP and optimum high pressure. With the increased ambient temperature from 35°C to 45°C, the cooling capacity and the optimum COP decrease by 14.1% and 19.9%, respectively, which indicates that the system performance experiences a severe decline at hot climates.
