Experimental and numerical investigations of ice-slurry generator performance.

Author(s) : KAWAJI M., STAMATIOU E., HONG R., et al.

Summary

A new test facility equipped with refrigerant and brine circulation systems and a plate-type ice-slurry generator test section have been developed to collect fundamental data on ice-slurry flow and heat transfer accompanied by phase change. Lower than average heat transfer efficiency has been identified in the upper half of the ice generator and its cause has been investigated by conducting 3-dimensional numerical simulations using a commercial CFD code. Improvements on the test rig (mixing blades in storage tanks, new inlet feeder) to improve heat transfer rates, are described.
