Summary
For traditional Newtonian fluids, a wide range of suitable measuring equipment exists, but for pseudohomogeneous two phase fluids such as ice slurry, measuring viscosity using traditional viscometers is difficult, due to the separation of ice and carrier liquid and the melting of ice particles. To determine viscosity using a different approach, a capillary tube viscometer has been designed. The paper describes the methodology of using measured corresponding flow rates and pressure drops to determine the ice slurry viscosity and yield stress. The approach also makes it possible to define the transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian characteristics. The results from initial trials have been compared to theoretical models for Newtonian slurries.
