Summary

The “drop-in” tests of R1234yf in a mobile air conditioning system were carried out and the results of system performance were compared to the same system with R134a. The performance tests of this system with these two different refrigerants were carried out in a psychrometric calorimeter test facility based on enthalpy difference method. The system performance was investigated in low load conditions, middle load conditions and high load conditions. It was found that the optimum refrigerant charge of R1234yf was about 90% compared to R134a with the same mobile air-conditioning system. When working at the optimum refrigerant charge, the system cooling capacity and COP of R1234yf could be 11 and 8.3% lower than that of R134a system, respectively. When the wind tunnel test carried out in a real car, it was found that the carriage temperature of vehicle with R1234yf system dropped slower. The average carriage temperature and blower outlet temperature could be 2°C higher than that of R134a system during the test.
