Summary

THE STORAGE PERIOD OF MANGOES CVS TOMMY ATKINS, MAYA, HADEN AND KEITT MAY BE EXTENDED FOR SEVERAL WEEKS UNDER CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE CONDITIONS. TOMMY ATKINS, MAYA AND HADEN MAY BE STORED FOR 6-8 WEEKS AND KEITT FOR 8-10 WEEKS. EVEN AT HIGH STORAGE TEMPERATURES, CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE HAS THE EFFECT OF DELAYING RIPENING. ONLY FRUIT PICKED AT THE COMMENCEMENT OF A GIVEN VARIETY ARE SUITABLE FOR LONG CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE STORAGE AND ADDITIONAL TREATMENTS INFLUENCE STORAGE QUALITY. POSTHARVEST TREATMENT CAN DELAY FUNGAL DECAY. THE RECOMMENDED STORAGE TEMPERATURE IS 286-287 K (13-14 DEG C) AS LOWER TEMPERATURES MAY CAUSE CHILLING INJURY. THE LEVELS OF OXYGEN AND CARBON DIOXIDE CAN AFFECT TASTE ON RIPENING.
