Summary

After definition and a history of flexible packaging, its developments are set out. They include film-supports, sealed films, barrier coatings, co-extruded films, waxes, thermofusible paraffins, lacques and varnishes. Flexible packaging applies to canned food (canning), quick-freezing, dehydration, vacuum packaging, gas or modified atmosphere packaging and in-package cooking. The development of flexible packaging is paralleled with that of packaging machinery, current living standards and eating habits. Gas and water vapour barrier properties as well as the effectiveness of sealing are important features. Packaging should be practical and environmentally-friendly. J.L.
