Fluoroiodocarbons evaluated as CFC substitutes.

Type of article: Article

Summary

In seeking substitute refrigerants with both zero-ozone depletion and lower greenhouse effect characteristics than HFCs, preliminary evaluation points to the possible use of fluoroiodocarbons (FICs). The iodine component produces an atmospheric lifetime of about one week, giving the molecule almost no impact on the environment. Examples of FICs are trifluoroiodomethane and pentafluoroiodoethane. Alone, these compounds may be too unstable, but in near azeotropic mixtures with diethyl ether or cyclopropane they appear promising for replacement of R11 or R22. A 50-50 tested blend of R152a and trifluoroiodomethane has given similar performance to R12 in a household refrigerator. D.W.H.
