Summary

A freeze plug has been used successfully in the Gulf of Mexico in the replacement of an underwater section of oil piping. Oil was blocked off by three batching pigs, then replaced with sea water in the section to be replaced. The freezing jacket, previously tested on shore, was clamped round the pipe below the cutting area. The pipe had been examined for any deterioration which would have risks of cold embrittlement and failure. Then nitrogen lines were attached and the freeze started. After 4 hours the freeze plug was tested and the replacement work commenced. A complete description is given of the procedures which took 40 hours in all. Although containment and clean-up equipment was installed no spillage took place and the result was satisfactory. D.W.H.
